Belarus and Italy to intensify cooperation within the EU Horizon 2020 program

Belarus and Italy are planning to intensify scientific, technical and innovative cooperation in the field of ICT, medicine, energy, new materials, including in the framework of the European Union's Science and Innovation Horizon 2020 program. Such an agreement was reached during a meeting between Alexander Shumilin, Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus, and Lorenzo Fioramonti, Minister of Education, Universities and Research of the Italian Republic. At present, Belarusian scientists and specialists together with partners from Italy participate in 11 projects of the European Union's Science and Innovation Horizon 2020 program with a total budget of more than 1 million 160 thousand euros. According to Alexander Shumilin, in close cooperation with the Italy, Belarus will be able to expand its participation in the EU’s Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe framework programs. “We are interested in the Italian experience and best practices of participating in European Union science and innovation programs,” he said.

During the meeting, parties disussed the work of the joint commission in the field of science and technology and the announcement of the competition of joint fundamental and applied projects in science, technology and innovation, as well as the prospects for creating the production of high-tech goods and services with access to the markets of third countries.

Thirteen existing international treaties and international legal documents (including 7 intergovernmental international treaties) are the basis of the legal framework of Belarusian-Italian relations. In September 2019, the Italian side ratified the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Italian Republic on cooperation in the field of science and technology (entered into force on November 26, 2019).
