Alexander Shumilin: Integration of education, science and production is the most important condition for the innovative economy development

The integration of education, science and production is the most important condition for the innovative economy development. This was announced by the Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Shumilin during his visit to the production facilities of the Science and Technology Park of the BNTU "Polytechnic". According to him, the technopark is closely integrated into a practice-oriented training of highly qualified specialist engineers within the framework of the University 3.0 concept implemented at the university.

“The experience of Polytechnic in the development of research, innovation infrastructure and the commercialization of the results of intellectual activity should be widely used by other subjects of innovative infrastructure. This is a promising area and a global trend, therefore, it is necessary to more actively involve students and scientific youth in the innovation process and entrepreneurial activity, including to solve the problems of both a separate industry sector and the country as a whole,” said Alexander Shumilin. As an example, he cited the rapid organization of production of medical devices in the context of the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 infection, when residents of the Polytechnic technology park developed and produced  oxygen fittings for ventilators, oxygen supply and humidification systems for seriously ill patients with pneumonia, and protective screens of masks for medical staff using 3D printing.

Currently, more than 40 students, undergraduates and graduate students work for technopark. Over two years, more than 300 students have successfully completed internships at the Polytechnic. First of all, this is a significant experience in exploring new technologies and high-tech equipment. It should be noted that the Startup Center BNTU “From Idea to Implementation” operates on the basis of the technopark. In 2019, 19 project teams became its participants, and the winners received grants totaling 18 thousand rubles. In addition, FABLAB Rapid Prototyping Laboratory operates for students, undergraduates and graduate students, which has 20 pieces of equipment for the manufacture of prototypes and models.

Within the framework of the State Program for Innovative Development of the Republic of Belarus for 2016-2020, the Science and Technology Park BNTU “Polytechnic” implements five innovative projects to create new industries that are crucial for the innovative development of the country, including the major innovative project “Creating and organizing innovative production center for the production of medical devices", implemented with the participation of leading medical institutions of the country - RSPC" Cardiology", RSPC traumatology and orthopedics, BelMAPO. As part of the project, a unique innovative production structure is being created, which allows for the production of more than 25 types of new items of medical devices in the field of cardiac surgery, traumatology and orthopedics, dentistry, certified in accordance with the requirements of ISO 13485 and ISO/IEC 17025. Products are supposed to be of import-substituting and export-oriented nature. Medical products do not have domestic analogues and analogues in the EAEU countries, correspond in their technical characteristics to the best world standards, can improve the availability and quality of high-tech heart operations due to unique technical properties and solutions, as well as a significant reduction in cost.

Reference: Republican Innovation Unitary Enterprise “Science and Technology Park BNTU Polytechnic” was established by the Belarusian State Polytechnic Academy (today BNTU) in 1992 and is currently the largest and most developed innovative structure in the educational system of the country. Technopark is the first organization in Belarus to receive the status of a subject of innovation infrastructure (science and technology park). Since 2004, Polytechnic has been registered by the Ministry of Economy as a center for supporting innovative entrepreneurship. Technopark is accredited by the SCST and the NAS of Belarus as a scientific organization. Its residents are 19 innovative enterprises that use the results of research and development of BNTU in their activities.

For 2017-2019, the volume of produced innovative products (goods, works, services) by the technopark and its residents amounted to 28 654.3 thousand rubles, the export volume is 6367.2 thousand rubles, including export of innovative products (goods, works, services) - 4137.8 thousand rubles. For the first half of 2020, revenue from sales of products (goods, works, services) is projected at 2746 thousand rubles. Despite the difficult global epidemiological and economic situation over the past period of this year, the technopark implemented export contracts totaling about 180 thousand rubles. The main export destinations were China, Russia, France and Sweden.
