Alexander Shumilin: Exports of services in the use of intellectual property increased almost fivefold
2021 Return back
The volume of exports of services in the field of payment for the use of intellectual property in 2020 amounted to 125 million US dollars and compared to 2016 increased by almost five times. This was announced today at the opening of the Summer School of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Minsk by the Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Shumilin. According to him, the use of intellectual property rights can bring significant income both for an individual organization and for the country as a whole. “Despite the difficult external economic situation, the first half of 2021 was marked by a steady growth in the export of services in the field of payment for the use of intellectual property compared to the same period in 2020. This speaks of the demand for domestic developments abroad, as well as the fact that Belarusians are making more and more money on their intellect, ”stressed Alexander Shumilin. He also noted that in addition to inventive activity, one of the key factors of the country's economic development is the level of legal literacy in the field of intellectual property, which allows for effective use of innovative potential. SCST is actively working in this area both at the international and national levels. This is evidenced by a number of joint projects implemented by the national patent office of Belarus with the support of WIPO, including the Summer School, which is being held for the first time.
Summer Schools of the World Intellectual Property Organization are educational and training events organized in various countries around the world in cooperation with IP offices and higher education institutions. The Summer School program includes issues such as international and regional patent systems, trademarks and the Internet, creative industries and IP, copyright licensing, IP protection, IP management and valuation, public health protection, “green technologies”, etc.
The event takes place in Minsk from 19 to 30 July as part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Belarus and the World Intellectual Property Organization, as well as in accordance with the Strategy of the Republic of Belarus in the field of intellectual property.
