Alexander Shumilin: Belarusian science is ready for the challenges of the global world economy

Belarusian science is ready for the challenges of the global world economy and is able to ensure the development of knowledge-intensive goods and services that are competitive on the world market. This was announced today at the opening of the XIV International Scientific and Practical Conference "Economic Growth of the Republic of Belarus: Globalization, Innovation, Sustainability" by the Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Shumilin. According to him, Belarus is in a continuous process of improving the scientific, technical and innovative spheres, including using the best international experience in the development of science and technology. «The government has set the task of developing and implementing innovative projects to create high-tech industries based on the developments of Belarusian scientists in the regions of our country, taking into account their competitive advantages. And there is no doubt that scientists should play a leading role here», Alexander Shumilin said.

He also noted that every year dozens of innovative products are developed in Belarus, which has a great potential for commercialization, both within the country and abroad. For example, JSC «Planar» has developed equipment for the formation of topological structures on photomasks that has no analogues in the world and is already supplied to the markets of Germany, Israel, South Korea and China. Belkommunmash has mastered the production of electric buses. More than 80 units were manufactured and sold, including for export to Russia. Belarusian clinics have introduced a method of surgical treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms using an exoprosthesis made of biological material. This development reduces the surgical trauma, the duration of treatment of patients and the number of postoperative complications. The cost of treatment is reduced by 20%. In Belarus, the reduction in the cost of treatment at the initial stage of the implementation of the method has already amounted to more than 400 thousand US dollars. High-tech equipment for verifying the authenticity of documents, banknotes and securities of the Belarusian company Regula is used by border services, law enforcement agencies and banks from more than 80 countries, including the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Israel, etc. Unique X-ray inspection and medical equipment, desktop analytical devices and non-destructive testing equipment developed and manufactured by the Belarusian State Enterprise «ADANI» are supplied to the markets of 70 countries, including the United States, South Korea, Japan and the European Union. The company has developed and delivered to clinics in Belarus an X-ray computed tomograph, which is 30% cheaper than imported analogues.

«2021 is the year of the beginning of a new five-year plan – the dynamics of the entire five-year plan will depend on its start. This year, we need to solve a number of important tasks, including ensuring the effective launch of the state program for innovative development and scientific and technical programs, as well as entering new markets for the export of Belarusian high-tech and high-tech products», Alexander Shumilin stressed.
